Than those of species in which growth slows significantly during the winter months. Conservation: Dace thrive in good quality water with adequate flow, and where a varied habitat provides them with abundant and diverse food items. Deep areas of water are important for overwintering, with shallow, well-flushed gravels necessary for spawning. Good habitat complexity also enables Dace to evade predators such as cormorants and Pike. Young fish require food-rich warm water, generally in the river margins, to maximize growth during the summer.
