This is the logic Kant attributes to indefinite judgment. In reiterating the first part of the antithesis, Kant denies the existence of any limit to phenomena. In turn, the indefi nite toward which the second part of the solution points may have the ability to introduce a limit, and in so doing posit something there where there seemed to be nothing. I L L E G I T I M AT E P O S I T I N G Let us now assume we have learned the lesson from the logical failure of the mathematical antinomy. If the world existed, if it were a thing-in-itself, Negation and Objectivity 33 the arguments about it would be contradictorily opposed.

Without the unconditioned, an idea and need of reason but not a reality in the world, reason cannot complete the series and fulfi ll its illusion that the world exists as a whole.  So the world cannot exist in a double sense: first, in what concerns its reality, the world as a total object that includes all phenomena cannot be an object of experience, and thus cannot be cognized. Second, in what concerns reason’s aspiration to conceive of the world as an “absolute totality in the synthesis of conditions,” the idea of the world fails to cohere as such because reason is unable to complete the series of conditions without an unconditioned element that stops regress and gives the series a closure.

In conceiving of noumenon as object of nonsensible intuition, this judgment attaches to noumenon a predicate that still qualifies it in terms of intuition: something sensible (intuition) still defines the link between subject and predicate, as well as between noumenon and phenomenon. In so doing (rather than in simply affirming a negative predicate), the negation leaves a remainder behind. In qualifying the link between the subject and the predicate it puts in relationship in terms of intuition, this negative judgment illicitly presupposes that the subject, noumenon, has a positive status.
