During the 1794 Whiskey Rebellion, when farmers of western Pennsylvania resisted a federal tax on distilled spirits, Hamilton donned his uniform and, with Washington, personally led troops to quash the protests.

Only a few gained freedom, however; most succumbed to illness or were recaptured. American History achievements, including the Treaty of Paris, securing American independence, and the Northwest Ordinance (1787), providing for the surveying, settlement, and formation of states in the territory bounded by the Appalachians, the Great Lakes, and the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers. One notable provision funded public education through land sales. The ordinance prohibited slavery in the region and pledged to honor Indian treaties—the latter provision soon violated.

Agriculture—cotton and tobacco in the South, grains and livestock in the North and West—remained central. The annual value of America’s (mostly agricultural) exports reached $250 million by the 1850s. But industry grew as well, facilitated by skilled immigrants with knowledge of British production technologies. In 1822 Boston investors opened a mechanized cotton mill along the Merrimack River in nearby Lowell. Young farm women comprised the initial workforce, but immigrants soon replaced them. Soon, factories across the North were manufacturing textiles, shoes, clocks, guns, machinery, railroad cars, and myriad other products.
