It is probably little exaggeration to say that for every historian you come across there is a route to the time before now. The reason for this is not difficult to work out. It is that history is a constituted and positioned knowledge about the past and this status is due to three of its most obvious characteristics: first, its vast range of empirical sources to choose from (as the basis of its empiricism); second, its analytical dimensions (inference, a priori/a posteriori thinking, conceptualisation and theorised explanation) and finally, the different epistemological 29 ANNALES journal in particular, are typical of the (reconstructionist) approach and perspective.

The insecurity of the modernist notion that all historical texts must not only reference external reality but also be knowable as such prompts the question of whether historians should primarily address the cultural and language-use forms in which history is written and conceived. Should historians rethink their evidence and sources, not as the privileged centre of knowledge, but as one site of knowledge among many? The traces of the past cannot give exclusive historical knowledge, only an impression of pastness.
